Straight teeth play an integral role in your oral health.  Crooked or overcrowded teeth can lead to Malocclusion which can cause jaw problems, speech problems, chewing problems, or gum disease.
Metal braces are an orthodontic treatment used to typically help in more severe cases when a patient has crooked or overcrowded teeth that Invisalign will be less effective against straightening.

Straight Teeth, Cost & Other Benefits of Metal Braces?

Metal braces help correct dental crowding, they reduce the chance of damaging your prominent teeth and they make your front and back teeth meet evenly.
The braces do this by applying pressure to your teeth so they’ll move and realign but they can also move your jaw as well if the wire is tightened or rubber bands are used.
This orthodontic treatment allows for better control and more accurate teeth movement in more complex teeth straightening situations, especially with teeth rotation.
Metal braces are incredibly durable and are less likely to cause discoloured teeth than Invisalign if you are not disciplined with your routine.  They can also improve your overall dental health once your teeth are straight they are much easier to clean.
The cost of metal braces can range between $3000-$6000 and are typically comparable to Invisalign leading many people to choose Invisalign if they only have mild-moderate straightening needs.
This is also because Invisalign clear aligners outweigh the metal braces in benefits for their appearance, diet, and amount of time they’re required for.

When does Invisalign give you straighter teeth than Metal Braces?

Invisalign, according to a study in 2019 is not as effective against treating malocclusions as metal braces.  However, there is still an abundance of cases where Invisalign is much more beneficial than metal braces.
1.  Orthodontists don’t bond them to your teeth making them removable for more freedom and comfort
2.  They are clear aligners and are therefore practically invisible so you’ll feel less insecure about your smile
3.  Invisalign takes advantage of 3D imaging and mapping software so you can get a more specific and tailored approach for tooth movement
4.  You’ll get a new set of Invisalign clear aligners every few weeks
5.  You can take your clear aligners out while eating and brushing your teeth so they won’t get in the way of your normal routine

How to get straight teeth?

You should go with metal braces if your teeth’ alignment needs are more severe so you can correct crowded or crooked teeth properly.  If you have only minor to moderate teeth straightening needs we typically recommend Invisalign as they are skyrocketing in popularity and can often do these types of teeth-straightening cases better and faster.  If you are unsure of what option is best for you, ask your local orthodontist or contact our London Ontario dental clinic.  We can recommend the best option for you and let you know what each option would cost.
It is very important that no matter what type of braces you choose, you are diligent with your oral hygiene routine to prevent gingivitis and plaque from forming by cleaning each tooth.
