What is a dental emergency

Dentists in Ontario are only treating dental emergencies during this time, and as such, there are many questions and slight confusion as to what is deemed a dental emergency.

According to the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO), a dental emergency includes “oral-facial trauma, significant infection, prolonged bleeding or pain which cannot be managed by over-the-counter medications.”

What does this mean?

It means that if you have the following conditions, they fall into the category of emergency dental treatment and you should call us right away:

  • Any toothaches: pressure or temperature sensitivity, and especially if this condition is preventing you from sleeping or eating properly
  • Any swelling inside your mouth or facial swelling
  • Broken tooth that is causing irritation to your cheeks or tongue, and not allowing you to eat or sleep properly
  • Knocked out tooth
  • Badly bitten lip or tongue
  • Something stuck between your teeth that you cannot get out with floss
  • Lost filling that is causing you pain

As dentists, we have the legal, ethical, and professional responsibility to treat our patients regarding dental emergencies.

In order to flatten the COVID-19 infection curve, we are taking every measure to maintain the precautionary guidelines set out by Public Health Ontario and the RCDSO, which includes screening of patients via telephone and/or videoconferencing.

During the screening, Dr. Sbenati will be asking you many questions to properly manage your emergency. After triaging your specific and individual situation, he will either prescribe over-the-counter medications and/or schedule an appointment for you to see him at our clinic. We value you and we appreciate your patience during these times as we continue to do our part to flatten the COVID-19 curve.

Please call us at 519-474-0220 or email us info@sbenatidentistry.ca should you have any questions or concerns, we care for you.
